Trump Will Talk to DOJ About Maxwell Pardo
President Donald Trump said Monday that he will speak to the Justice Department about a possible presidential pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell.
Trump has spent the past several months dodging controversy surrounding Maxwell and her former associate and disgraced financier, Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell gave a series of interviews to Trump’s DOJ after the administration angered the president’s base by saying earlier this year that there is no so-called “Epstein List.”
Maxwell was found guilty in 2021 of crimes related to child sex trafficking. However, her appeal to overturn her conviction was denied by the Supreme Court on Monday.
“I haven’t heard the name in so long,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday evening when asked if he’d heard about Maxwell’s request for a presidential pardon. “I’d have to take a look at it. I would have to take a look.”
“I’ll speak to the DOJ. I wouldn’t consider it or not consider it. I don’t know anything about it, but I’ll speak to the DOJ,” he continued. “I don’t know. I may not have to speak to the DOJ. I’ll look at it. I have a lot of people who have asked me for pardons.”
When pressed on why he would consider a pardon for Maxwell, considering the nature of her crimes, Trump reiterated that he would “have to take a look at it.”
“I have to ask DOJ. I didn’t know they rejected it. I didn’t know she was even asking for it,” Trump concluded.
When asked in July whether he would pardon Maxwell, Trump told reporters he was “allowed to give her a pardon, but nobody’s approached me with it, nobody’s asked me about it.”
