Person of Interest in Brown Shooting Released
Person of Interest in Brown Shooting Released
A "person of interest" detained in the Brown University mass shooting was being released, officials said late Sunday
Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez said at a Sunday night briefing on plans to release the sole person detained in connection with the attack that Brown confirmed killed two students and wounded nine others that evidence in the investigation "now points in a different direction."
Officials acknowledged at the briefing community concerns as police search for a suspect in Saturday's shooting. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley noted that news of the release of the man who was detained as a person of interest "is likely to cause fresh anxiety."
However, Brown University said in a statement late Sunday that local police "have advised they do not believe there is any immediate threat to Brown or the local community."
Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said at the Sunday night briefing there's "no basis" to believe the man whom police had detained was this person.
New footage released
CCTV released by Providence Police on Monday shows a man walking on the pavement on a road with cars driving past at 4.06pm. He appears to be dressed all in black, but his face is not visible.
"Right now, we don't have any evidence to suggest that it was more than that individual," Providence mayor Brett Smiley said after the release of the footage.
Two handguns were recovered when the original person of interest was taken into custody and police also found two loaded 30-round magazines, a police official said.
FBI Offering $50,000 Reward
The FBI is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who carried out the deadly mass shooting at Brown University, as authorities seek a suspect after releasing a person of interest who was detained Sunday.
