New ICE Detention Facility Set to Open in Indiana
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed to Fox News on Tuesday that it will open a new immigration detention facility at the Miami Correctional Facility in Indiana, expanding federal detention capacity by 1,000 beds.
The site, branded as the “Speedway Slammer,” will be part of DHS’s ongoing effort to centralize high-security detention for what officials describe as “the worst of the worst” criminal non-citizens. The announcement was first reported by Fox News, which received exclusive statements from DHS Secretary Kristi Noem and Indiana Governor Mike Braun.
“COMING SOON to Indiana: The Speedway Slammer,” Secretary Noem said in a statement to Fox News. “Today, we’re announcing a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention bed space by 1,000 beds. Thanks to Governor Braun for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country. If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana’s Speedway Slammer. Avoid arrest and self deport now using the CBP Home App.”
Governor Braun praised the initiative as a model for state-federal cooperation on immigration enforcement.
“We are proud to work with President Trump and Secretary Noem as they remove the worst of the worst with this innovative partnership,” Braun told Fox News. “Indiana is taking a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combating illegal immigration and will continue to lead the way among states.”
The facility will operate in partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is part of a broader DHS strategy to expand detention infrastructure in states willing to collaborate with federal immigration authorities. The “Speedway Slammer” branding follows previous DHS facilities nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” a term used internally to describe high-security detention centers for non-citizens with serious criminal records.
The Miami Correctional Facility, a state-run prison located in Bunker Hill, Indiana, will be retrofitted to accommodate the new ICE detainee population. The expansion is expected to begin later this year, pending final approvals.
