Mississippi Mass Shooting: 4 Killed, 12 Injured

At least four people were killed and 12 others were injured during a mass shooting in Mississippi.

The incident took place in Leland around midnight local time on Saturday, Oct. 11, according to the BBC and CBS News.

Leland Mayor John Lee told CBS News that the city where the shooting took place was busier than usual, as people were in town to catch Leland High School's homecoming game against Charleston High School.

Four of the injured were airlifted to the hospital, per CBS News. Their conditions have not been disclosed.

Police now have 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe in custody. They are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact authorities, Desoto County News reported.

In a statement on Facebook after the incident, Maylor Lee wrote, "I’m deeply saddened about the tragedy that happened in the City of Leland."

"Due to the tragedy and the safety of others. The block party is canceled!!!!!!!!!," the local politician continued.

A curfew had been implemented in the city after the mayor declared the area under a state of emergency, the Daily Mail reported, citing the Leland Police Department (LPD), which did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on Oct. 11.

An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.

The shooting took place after two people were shot and killed three hours away on a football field at Heidelberg High School, WDAM reported.

Heidelberg Mayor Robert Barnett said in a statement, per the outlet, “The City of Heidelberg will be in full cooperation with the school district, the sheriff’s department, and we will definitely pursue the person who caused this incident.”
