Two people were killed and five others were injured in an early morning shooting in Indianapolis on Sunday, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

Sunday's shooting has added to a growing tally of gun violence incidents affecting local communities across the country and an intense 24-hours in Indianapolis.

The shooting came after IMPD officers encountered a 34-year-old man at a McDonald's on Saturday evening who was armed with a gun, threatening employees. When officers approached the man, it led to an officer-involved shooting, according to a press release from the department. The suspect was not struck by the gunfire and was taken into custody after he fled the fast-food restaurant.

IMPD officers found five people suffering from gunshot wounds when they responded to a report of gunfire at the 6800 block of Shore Terrace after 2 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Two people were pronounced dead on the scene while three others were transported to the hospital, according to a press release from the IMPD. Two more victims self-transported themselves to a hospital and to a fire station, the release said.

Three victims are in critical condition while the other two are in serious condition, local news station WTHR reported.

A preliminary investigation revealed a disturbance preceded the shooting that took place in a parking lot, but no further information has been given about the suspect or suspects.

Homicide detectives and forensic investigators are gathering evidence as part of IMPD's investigation.

The IMPD stated that detectives will continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal shooting.

The Marion County Coroner's Office is expected to release the names of the deceased after notifying their families.
