House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan formally summoned ex-special counsel Jack Smith to appear for a deposition and answer questions about his probe of President Trump that led to two separate federal prosecutions of the once and future commander in chief.

“Due to your service as Special Counsel, the Committee believes that you possess information that is vital to its oversight of this matter,” Jordan explained in a letter accompanying the Wednesday subpoena.

Jordan (R-Ohio) had demanded in October that Smith voluntarily answer questions and furnish key documents to his panel.

Smith has publicly defended his investigation and prosecutions of Trump, contending that a jury would have convicted the 45th and 47th president of unlawfully conspiring to overturn the 2020 election result and hoarding national security documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort — had Trump not won a second non-consecutive term last year.

Jordan’s subpoena demands that Smith appear for a deposition on Dec. 17 and provide documents to his panel by Dec. 12.

Since March, Jordan has targeted top former aides to Smith, referring former senior assistant Thomas Windom to the Justice Department for potential prosecution last month.

Smith previously offered to give public testimony before the House and Senate Judiciary committees.

However, Jordan’s team often prefers to do a deposition behind closed doors before agreeing to hear from witnesses with an audience.

“We are disappointed that offer was rejected, and that the American people will be denied the opportunity to hear directly from Jack on these topics,” Smith’s attorney Peter Koski said in a statement about the subpoena.

“Jack looks forward to meeting with the committee later this month to discuss his work and clarify the various misconceptions about his investigation.”

In addition to testimony, the subpoena also demands communications and documents pertaining to Smith’s time as a special counsel.

The subpoena comes as new details about Smith’s probe have been released to the public, including revelations that the FBI’s Arctic Frost probe, which Smith took over, obtained phone records of 10 Republican lawmakers.
