Ex-VP Dick Cheney Dies at 84
Former Vice President Dick Cheney died Monday night at age 84, his family announced.
Cheney was the 46th vice president of the United States. He served under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. He previously served as chief of staff to President Gerald Ford and as defense secretary for President George H.W. Bush.
“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025,” a statement given to Punchbowl News reads. “His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him when he passed. The former vice president died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.”
“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing,” the statement continues. “We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”
The former vice president was born in 1941 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He dropped out of Yale University and then received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Wyoming. He worked in the White House during the Nixon and Ford administrations and was elected to represent Wyoming in the House of Representatives. He served in Congress from 1979 to 1989. He was then nominated and confirmed as defense secretary in 1989 during the H.W. Bush administration.
Cheney suffered from heart-related health problems for much of his life. He had five heart attacks between 1978 and 2010 and underwent a successful heart transplant in 2012.
He was vice president during the 9/11 attacks. He was seen as a chief architect of the Iraq War and known for his outsize influence behind the scenes during the W. Bush administration.
Former President George W. Bush released a statement on Cheney’s legacy Tuesday morning, saying Cheney’s “love for America was second only to his family.”
“The death of Richard B. Cheney is a loss to the nation and a sorrow to his friends. Laura and I will remember Dick Cheney for the decent, honorable man that he was. History will remember him as among the finest public servants of his generation – a patriot who brought integrity, high intelligence, and seriousness of purpose to every position he held,” Bush wrote in a statement.
The White House lowered its flags to half-staff in honor of Cheney Tuesday morning, per CBS News’s Jennifer Jacobs.
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who served with Cheney in two administrations, said he was “an inspiring presence and mentor who taught me a great deal about public service.”
“I will remember his toughness but also his sense of humor. He was indefatigable in his determination to defend this country and patriotic to his core,” Rice continued.
Former Vice President Mike Pence shared similar sentiments to Bush in an X post, noting condolences to Cheney’s family on behalf of himself and his wife Karen.
“Throughout his long career, he was an American patriot who championed the men and women in our Armed Forces and the importance of maintaining a strong national defense for America’s security at home and abroad. @KarenPence and I will always be grateful for Vice President Cheney’s service and his personal kindness during our time in office,” Pence said.
Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger, a close ally of former Rep. Liz Cheney as they worked together on the Jan. 6 committee, released the following statement on her father’s passing.
“I’d like to share my family’s deepest condolences to my friend @Liz_Cheney for the passing of her father. A man who, like his daughter, deeply loved his country,” Kinzinger wrote.
