Cowboys' Jerry Jones Reveals He Survived Stage 4 Cancer
Jerry Jones revealed that he battled cancer in a stunning development.
The Dallas Cowboys' longtime owner, 82, announced that he battled cancer for over 10 years.
Jones and the Cowboys are tasked with their second preseason game this upcoming weekend.
They are coming off a 31-21 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason opener last Saturday.
On Tuesday, Jones spoke to reporters and shared a stunning admission.
Jones said that he once battled stage 4 melanoma, per the Dallas Morning News.
Fortunately, Jones then shared that he beat the cancer after undergoing four surgeries.
"I now have no tumors," Jones told the outlet.
He then shared that the initial skin cancer diagnosis occurred in 2010.
For the next 10 years, Jones had four surgeries, two on his lungs and two on his lymph nodes.
He credited the experimental drug PD-1, which is short for Programmed Cell Death Protein 1, for beating the cancer.
"I was saved by a fabulous treatment and great doctors and a real miracle [drug] called PD-1 [therapy]," Jones said.
"I went into trials for that PD-,1 and it has been one of the great medicines."
Jones took part in interviews for Netflix's soon-to-be-released series America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys.
During an episode, he mentioned having cancer treatments, which caused the Dallas Morning News to ask him about it in the interview.
Jones took part in close to 40 hours of interviews with Netflix.
The documentary's fifth episode touched on the spiral of Jones' relationship with coach Jimmy Johnson.
Early in the episode, Jones said that a physician gave him advice.
"You need to do a lot of meditation. Make a list of 10 people who can just boil your blood," Jones recalled what an MD Anderson physician told him.
"Start with the one at the top and wish for them the greatest things you can wish for.
"At No. 1, I wrote down the name ‘Jimmy Johnson.'"
Jones did reportedly work through a medical issue that kept him from meeting with the media at the 2022 Scouting Combine.
It's not known whether Jones was dealing with cancer at the time.
Jones and the Cowboys will prepare for the upcoming 2025 season.
They'll face the Philadelphia Eagles in the league's season-opener on September 4.
It's possible the Cowboys could be without star pass rusher Micah Parsons, who is currently embroiled in a contract dispute with Jones.
Parsons is seeking a deal that will make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL.
The four-time Pro Bowler released a lengthy statement that included a trade request from the team.
Jones has since thrown cold water on the request.
