White House chief of staff Susie Wiles claimed that the last year affected President Donald Trump in a way “the country benefits from.”
Wiles is the first female White House chief of staff. She does not claim to be the first woman to chair a presidential campaign, which was her position before her promotion. Due to her longtime association with the president, she cited the change she’s seen in him.
“I think people noted the change. There was a slight change in the president, and the way he operated and the way he would kind of take a second and think through things. People gave you a lot of credit for that, Susie,” Lara Trump said during an interview with Wiles Saturday on Fox News’s My View with Lara Trump.
“He’s been through so much. The lawfare, having been the leader of the free world, having an assassination attempt. He’s a different person than he was. So, I really don’t think any one person changed him. I think life experience and who he is changed him,” Wiles said.
“I think he’s a better leader now. So, I don’t know that I had anything to do with that, but I think the country benefits from it.”
Lara Trump noted that Wiles was credited with helping her father, Pat Summerall, overcome alcoholism. The host suggested that “maybe it’s that little bit of tough love approach” she used on her father that works on Trump.
“He probably would tell you that. I am so lucky to have a really good sort of dynamic with him. I’m older, I’m a female, I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve been with him long enough that we have a pretty good easy thing going,” Wiles, 67, said.
“But that doesn’t mean I don’t wake up every single day and be a little on edge to make sure I keep that up and do it right every day because that’s what he deserves and what the country deserves from us.”
Wiles previously worked under the Ronald Reagan administration in scheduling. Afterward, she took a break from Washington, D.C., politics to be with her small children in Jacksonville, Florida.
