Texas Capitol Evacuated Over ‘Credible Threat’ to Lawmakers

Texas officials on Saturday warned of a credible threat against state legislators at the Capitol, prompting heightened security measures during protests.

The alert came from the Texas Department of Public Safety alerting the public that a credible threat would be in attendance at protests taking place at the state capitol, according to a post shared to X on Saturday by Brad Johnson, a reporter based in Texas.

“Alert. Alert. Alert. There is an active law enforcement event at Texas Capitol (1100 Congress Ave). A credible threat towards state legislators attending today’s protest at the State Capitol has been identified by Capitol Region DPS. We are working with our law enforcement partners and are leveraging all available resources to address this threat,” the alert said.

“Additional updates will be provided as information is developed.. You will be updated as more information is available,” the alert continued.

There seemed to be fear that this could be a copycat or related to the murder of two state lawmakers that took place Saturday morning in Minnesota, according to an email obtained by Johnson that was sent by Republican Texas State Rep. Charlie Green to other legislators.

“I am in communication with our federal partners, and currently, it seems to be an isolated incident. However, we’re always concerned about copycats and those who this attack might inspire. Your safety is our top priority, and we are taking all necessary precautions to address any potential threats,” the email read.

The protest, called “No Kings,” was part of a nationwide demonstration — of more than 1,800 total protests — against President Donald Trump and what participants described as his “authoritarian-like rule.”

No further details have been announced at this time.
