I know this looks colorful. But it may not be green. This is why:
According to some credible reports, if your monitor is a CRT it is definitely more energy efficient to show a black screen than a white screen. This is because white is full power and black is no power through the tube to the phosphor that lights up the pixel.
However, If your monitor is the LCD type that uses tiny florescent tubes to make a display it may actually be better to show white. The LCDs may actually use slightly more energy to show black.
But take heart. New technologies that will make even the LCD monitors more energy-efficient are becoming available. These newer flat screen monitors are expected to again use a little more power to show a white screen. And again, black will be greener.
